Union input needed on labour standards

26 June, 2024The Global Reporting Initiative is currently drafting a new set of labour standards to ensure that labour issues are addressed comprehensively and ethically. The new draft is developed by a technical committee including the ILO, the ITUC and the IOE, but more input from unions is needed to safeguard workers’ rights.

Another explosion at Indonesian nickel plant injures workers

26 June, 2024An explosion at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) on 13 June left two workers with burns. It is the second explosion in six months at the same factory - the first killed 21 workers - and the union is calling for improved health and safety provisions.

Unions in Sri Lanka call for social dialogue on controversial bill

19 June, 2024Amid Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis since 2022, the government has introduced an economic transformation bill to ‘foster economic growth’. However, the bill, which provides for a new mechanism with power to relax legal restrictions on privatizing public-owned companies and hand over public resources to investors, is expected to adversely impact more than twelve million people in the country and render the Department of Labour ineffective.
